I’m ashamed to admit that I had no idea this restaurant existed until Monday. And I only ended up there because the restaurant I was meeting friends at turned out to be closed on Monday’s. Their loss though because Poquitos is pretty amazing. The design, the ambiance, the lighting, the food and the margaritas are darn near perfect in my book.
Fun fact: the same people who own Poquitos also own Bastille in Ballard. (If anyone cares, I approve of everything they’ve done.)
At this particular point in my life I am all about decent sized portions that taste good and aren’t going to make me hyperventilate when I see the bill. Which is why I would recommend reserving Crush for a special occasion, or if you know someone kind enough to treat you (Steve and I went with the latter). It’s delicious, the ambiance is very modern and relaxing, but the food is expensive and the portions are small.
I don't know if this beer is good or not, but I thought the label was pretty cute.
The espresso was really good.
I actually read Cold Mountain in 2007 when I was visiting some friends in Massachusetts. One of my friends who had seen the movie walked up to me when I was about 1/3 of the way into the book and said, “Can you believe _____ _____ ____?” I’m obviously not going to tell you what he said because I wouldn’t do that to someone (I mean who would?), but let’s just say it was as infuriating when my brother told me that Bruce Willis is dead the whole time in The Sixth Sense, as I was leaving for the movie theatre to see it for the first time. Grrrrr.
I have yet to see Cold Mountain the movie, but I can tell you that the book is a very well written and moving love story. It follows a confederate soldier on his journey through the Blue Ridge Mountains to get back to the woman he loves.
To be honest with you, I had no idea what was in Shepherd’s Pie until I googled it last weekend. As it turns out, it’s a delicious combo of mashed potatoes, ground beef and vegetables. You really can’t go wrong.
Last weekend Steve and I made Alton Brown’s version and I probably won’t ever try a different one. It was that good. (An important thing to note is that we used ground beef instead of ground lamb, which I would totally recommend.)
Also, there isn’t a photo to accompany this post. Which is probably for the best since it tastes way better than it looks.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending Seattle Magazine’s The Forecast. There were quite a few retailers involved, and I think the stylist(s) did a great job of mixing stylish outfits with fashionable Seattle-appropriate pieces. It doesn’t rain every day, but if you think layers aren’t necessary here, you’re talking crazy.
The event was at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle. I had never been there before and was really impressed with the space. (The main downfall to going anywhere downtown nowadays is that you have to pay to park on the street until 8pm. Are you KIDDING me Seattle? Geesh.)
There were so many things I liked, but I would say my favorite jackets overall were by Wraphabillement, launched by Elizabeth Roberts in 2011 and the designs by Terra, which were brought to the fashion show by Seattle E-Bike.
I actually read The English Patient a few months ago and forgot to post about it. I thought this book was fantastic. It’s beautifully written and it’s thought provoking. I still think about it months after reading it, which makes me want to read it again and then watch the movie. (I’ve heard the movie is good, but I’ve never seen it).
The book is about 4 people; a nurse, a spy, an Indian sapper and of course the English patient. It’s set at an Italian Villa at the end of World War II.
I figure it’s about time I start writing regularly about great Seattle places to eat and/or hangout. I’ve lived here for so long that I forget it might be interesting or helpful for someone to hear about the good spots here. Which is opposite of the logic I had when I was living in New York and told the World Wide Web about every single awesome thing I did. (Read about those adventures here.)
First, we’ll start with brunch at The Ridgeback Cafe, which is in the Phinney Ridge/Ballard area.
I ordered The Ridgeback crepe (with no mushrooms) and I swear to you, I could eat it once a week for the rest of my life.
I got crazy you guys. I made three sets of burp cloths. At one time.
