Happy New Year, indeed.

I have had such a jam-packed, whirlwind of a year. So much has happened in fact, that I just had to look back through all my photos in order to remember each and every adventure that I’ve experienced.

January in NYC. I thoroughly enjoyed the snow.

February in NYC. I got to watch the Narciso Rodriguez fashion show with the rest of the interns.

March in NYC. The view of Manhattan from NJ.

April in NYC. This was on the side of a building.

May in NYC. Lots of rooftop fun while I was there.

June in Seattle. I came back for a wedding and to celebrate when Steve got a master’s degree.

July in NYC. Lawn part on Governors Island.

August in NYC. Don’t know if you knew this, but it gets real hot there.

September in Vancouver, WA. Logo labels have arrived!

October in Seattle. The baking season begins.

November in Seattle. I made this jacket for someone.

December in Seattle. Christmas at Steve’s parent’s house.

Here’s to starting with a clean slate. It’s a brand new year with endless possibilities, and I definitely plan on making the best of it. As I ring in the New Year at a Mad Men-themed party, I wish you all a happy and safe 2011!

Holiday aprons for everyone

This year for Christmas my mom made aprons for a whole lot of family members (I believe 22 was the grand total).

She made some for the moms:

Some for the dads:

Some for the boys:

Some for the girls:

And even a bib that looks like an apron for the youngest:

As you can see, I get most of my insanity (22 aprons? That’s really only something I would do.) and sewing skills from my mom.

Christmas cookie party!

I know, I know. Christmas is over. But I wanted to share some photos of the Christmas cookie party I go to every year. The way we do it is that most of us bring cookies already baked for everyone to decorate, and the remaining people bring cookies to be baked once we’re there. This year we had gingerbread, sugar and eggnog cookies to decorate, and peanut butter blossoms and peppermint crisps to drop on a cookie sheet and bake.

For the peanut butter blossoms I bought Hershey holiday bells instead of Hershey kisses. They were real cute until they started melting.

Of all the decorated cookies, this one’s my favorite. I made a tiny pompadour head coming out of an angel.

This eggnog snowman cookie was decorated especially for me by my friend Rachel. She is a master baker if I ever knew one. (Check out her blog for all kinds of baking inspiration). She actually came up with her own version of this eggnog cookie and frosting recipe based off of one from America’s Test Kitchen. Here’s her recipe, which I would 100% recommend trying. They were delicious.

Eggnog Cookies
adapted from America’s Test Kitchen Holiday 2010 Holiday Cookies

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 lrg egg, room temp
1/2 cup plus 3 tbsp eggnog
2 tbsp rum
2 cups powdered sugar

1. Combine flour, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt in bowl. With electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and both sugars until light and fluffy, 2 minutes. Add egg and beat until incorporated. Reduce speed to low and alternate additions of flour mixture and 1/2 cup eggnog, mixing after each addition until combined. Divide dough into quarters, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour.

2. Adjust oven racks to upper-middle and lower-middle positions and heat oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Toll each dough quarter on a lightly-floured flat surface to 1/8-inch thickness.Using cookie cutter, cut out cookies and place 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake until edges are light brown, 6-10 minutes, rotating pans halfway through baking. Cool 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

3. Whisk remaining eggnog, rum, and powdered sugar together until smooth. Spoon scant teaspoon glaze over cookies, then decorate with sprinkles- be creative!

Pajama bottoms

This Christmas I made my brothers each a pair of pajama bottoms to replace the ones I made them a few years ago. I stuck with the cowboy theme for Kyle, and went with a rooster theme for Derek. (I think it may have been the color that struck my fancy.)

For the pockets I used fabric scraps I already had. (Cars, motorcycles, soccer balls and skulls all seemed relevant.)

Merry Christmas!

I am so looking forward to spending the weekend with my fiance and his family. It’s not very often that all 3 of his siblings and their significant others are in the same city at the same time – not to mention that Steve and I are in the same city at the same time (!). I plan on overindulging in a bit of everything. Starting right. Now.

Merry Christmas!

Navy blue cape

This cape is for my friend Christine, who happens to be insanely creative when it comes to fashion. I can’t wait to see how she styles this – and when she does, you can bet your bippy I’ll share the photos with you.

The rest of the ensemble:

Shirt: Target
Sweater: J.Crew, thrifted
Jeans: Forever 21
Boots: Nordstrom Rack
Scarf: Gift
Earrings: Jessica Simpson

babybabybabybaby

I’m running out of creative titles for posts involving baby items. Should I be apologetic for the repetitive nature of similar baby things in different colors? I really don’t know.

Anyway, more baby stuff! These little guys are for my friends Mike and Elisa. Elisa requested the purple shoes, which are now my favorite, and suggested embroidering the name on the gingham ribbon, which is genius. This is why I make things for other people – I learn a little something each and every time.

Top Secret

Just like the coat from two weeks ago, and the skirt from last Monday – I can’t tell you who this skirt is for. Don’t you love Christmas time? :)

I can tell you that it’s for a friend’s mom. The requests were: a knee-length wool skirt with pleats, a purple lining, fabric-covered buttons and pockets. Here’s to hoping it fits.

Tina’s coat!

Tina was kind (and brave) enough to send me a few photos of the coat I made her so that I could share the final product on the actual customer with you. You may remember the coat from this post.

Funny story – Tina is just about to finish her Master’s in Speech Pathology, which is exactly where my life was headed at one point in time. Until as a senior I was sitting in one of my 400 level Speech and Hearing Sciences classes at UW and for no reason that I can pin point, I thought to myself, “What the hell am I doing?”. Hence the career move to fashion. Hallelujah for that. But a whole-hearted congratulations goes out to Tina. I know how hard you’ve been working and I know you’re going to be a fantastic Speech Pathologist.

Thanks for the pictures Tina!! :)
