For the cutest and simultaneously overwhelming thing you’ll ever see. BAM.
Yes, that’s correct. This is a giant owl blanket bigger than I am. Awesome, yes? My friend Amy recently asked me to make a blanket for her baby. She’s waiting to find out the sex of the baby, and is using this owl and color scheme to decorate the baby’s room:
For some reason that owl made me remember a pattern I purchased about 3 years ago for absolutely no reason. Maybe I just knew I’d need it some day. Enter, pattern:
So I used Amy’s color scheme and this Simplicity pattern to create one whopper of a blanket.

The head. Is complete. (I had to turn it face-down when I was sewing the body because it started to freak me out.)
Then you wash it a couple of times to give it that soft frayed look, and there you have it. Done-zo.

You are amazing! This blanket kicks so much blanket butt!
Holy moly!!!!!
This blanket makes me happy
Shut Up!!! This is utter PERFECTION!!! Brilliance, I tell ya! Girl, you are too talented for words. Am having a ball drooling over all of your creations, but this just made my day!
I have this pattern and am planning on making it for my 16 year old daughter’s Christmas present who is into owls. Thinking about making the eyes not so round, maybe a bit more hooded. Did not realize how big the darn thing is! Better get started tonight! Love the colors you chose. Next spring I will make the flower for me. Great way to use up scraps!
You should definitely do it! It took a realllly long time, but was so worth it in the end. Your daughter will love it.

I am making a similar one – Simplicity also has a pattern that is a turtle, a caterpillar and a dinosaur. I am starting to put together my turtle.
Question for you! Did you quilt the pieces before you combined them…or after? I’m fairly new to sewing and completly making this up as I go. I can’t tell from the pattern and limited directions if I should do the “quilting” (across the pieces) now or after I sew it together. Help???
Hi Stephanie
You sandwich the batting between the two pieces and sew them together along the sides. Only the bigger pieces require actual quilting, and again you would sandwich the batting between both fabric layers and follow the sew lines indicated on each pattern piece. Hopefully this helps! Good luck!! I’m sure the turtle will be as magical as the owl.
