DIY: 3D Snowflakes!

I was taught how to make these a few years ago at a design internship I had. I tell you, it might be the most valuable thing I’ve ever learned.

You’ll need:

1. Scissors
2. Writing utensil
3. Tape
4. Stapler
5. Ruler (or straight edge of some sort)
6. 6 pieces of square paper – all the same size. It doesn’t matter how big they are, but to make things easier for your first one I would make the paper around 8″ X 8″.

Supplies.

Fold all 6 pieces of paper in half like so.

Using a pen/pencil and a ruler, draw lines that are evenly spaced apart. Make sure they don't meet in the middle. I made mine 1/2" apart, with a 1/2" space down the middle.

While still folded, cut along the lines - being sure not to go beyond the line that's down the middle. Unfold your paper.

Curl the center sections together and tape.

Turn over and do the same thing for the second section (they should be curled and taped on opposite sides).

Repeat until all sections are curled and taped, then do the same thing to the other 5 pieces of paper.

Take the points of three pieces and staple together.

Then staple the outside sections of those 3 pieces of paper together like so.

Repeat with the other three pieces of paper.

Staple the middle sections together.

Staple the remaining outside sections together.

Easy as pie.

Hang and enjoy!

Made by me: A coat for Dani

For Dani I made a high-collared royal blue wool coat. The wool was a bit hard to track down, but thankfully I found it because this coat might just be one of my favorites.

The rest of my outfit:

Shirt and skirt: Made by me
Tights: Target
Boots: Nordstrom Rack
Earrings: Boutique in Portland

Thank you Dani! :D

Best of Seattle Magazine: Outfit #2

This is the last post about the Seattle Magazine Best of 2010 party, I promise. For the final round you get to see what Megan’s second outfit was, and also what I wore to the event.

My outfit:

Jacket: Made by me (click here to buy it!)
Skirt: Made by me (Click here to buy one!)
T-shirt: Made by me
Tights: Target
Boots: Nordstrom Rack
Bright pink bracelet: Proof that while I may look 16, I am in fact over 21.

Megan’s outfit:

Capelet: Made by me (Click here to buy one!)
T-shirt: Made by me
Skirt: Made by me
Tights: Target
Boots: Hunter
Belt: H&M

It was such a fun night. Megan – thank you! I owe you big. Huge.

P.S. You may recall the sneak preview of a different plaid skirt? That one ended up being too long for the holiday-themed Hunter wellies and capelet outfit, so it got the boot. Luckily I had grabbed this back up skirt at the last second. Phew.

Best of Seattle Magazine: The event

To accompany yesterday’s post, here are some photos from the Seattle Magazine Best of 2010 party. Visualize; 1,700 guests, 29 participating restaurants, 21 participating wineries (read: free food and alcohol), live bands, Teatro Zinzanni performers and various Seamless in Seattle designers.

A special thanks to Steve for schlepping our stuff to and from the car countless times, and for taking such fantastic photos. Boy I’m lucky.

And just for kicks, Steve’s outfit:

Jacket: Alfani
Shirt: Made by me
Jeans: Levi 501′s
Shoes: Asics

Best of Seattle Magazine: Outfit #1

It has been a whirlwind of a weekend here in Seattle. Fantastic, but insanely busy. For today I will post Megan’s first outfit from the Best of 2010 Seattle Magazine party, and when I have more time I’ll explain what actually went down. What I’ll say for the moment is that Megan looked beautiful and did an absolutely fantastic job, Steve was a huge help, the spot I chose to take photos in had terrible lighting, and 1,700 Seattleites attended the event. Stay tuned!

Megan’s outfit:

Capelet and dress: Made by me
Tights: Target
Pumps: Charles Jourdan

Made by me: As cute as a button

I’m not sure if you’ve caught onto this, but I’m sort of obsessed with these baby shoes. Due to the fact that they’re freaking adorable and fairly quick to construct – everyone I know from here on out who has a baby will be getting a pair. I might even start giving them to people who don’t have babies.

George and Jennifer just found out they’re having a boy, so these were a cute little congratulatory gift to pop in the mail. Shipping cost to Seattle? $1.70. (Which of course makes them even cuter.)

Made by me: Sneak preview

I am currently in Seattle (!) in order to attend the Seattle Magazine Best of 2010 party tonight. (Click here for more details.) They’re celebrating the best of the past 10 years, as well as unveiling their new choices for 2010 (hint: I’m  one of them!). I’ve been busy creating two outfits to be worn by my model, and of course the outfit worn by me. Gotta’ represent, right? So due to traveling and being straight up crazy busy, I leave you with a sneak peek.

Inspiration: Holiday.

And obviously, you can count on tons of photos from the event. Nothing goes better with heels and a cocktail than a giant camera case. AmIrightoramIright?

Made by me: Brace yourself.

For the cutest and simultaneously overwhelming thing you’ll ever see. BAM.

Yes, that’s correct. This is a giant owl blanket bigger than I am. Awesome, yes? My friend Amy recently asked me to make a blanket for her baby. She’s waiting to find out the sex of the baby, and is using this owl and color scheme to decorate the baby’s room:

For some reason that owl made me remember a pattern I purchased about 3 years ago for absolutely no reason. Maybe I just knew I’d need it some day. Enter, pattern:

So I used Amy’s color scheme and this Simplicity pattern to create one whopper of a blanket.

Some of the orange and yellow squares for the stomach area (there were 48 of these. Wowza.)

Those same squares with fleece sandwiched between them.

Figuring out the placement.

The head. Is complete. (I had to turn it face-down when I was sewing the body because it started to freak me out.)

Everything is all sewn together! Then I had to make cuts into each seam, 1/2" apart.

Holy monotony. I seriously thought I was going to be doing that forever.

Then you wash it a couple of times to give it that soft frayed look, and there you have it. Done-zo.
